Whiskey, castles and a sad tale...
The Kilbeggan Distillery and Locke's Museum  is situated in the heart of Ireland and is where we were told by the locals to have lunch. It is in the small town of Kilbeggan and was established in 1757 by the McManus family.  It is the oldest continually licensed distillery in the world.  It has enjoyed the good times, but also the tough times for Irish whiskey, over its 250 year history.  We enjoyed our good times here today.
Kinnitty Castle Hotel is a gothic revival Castle located at the foothills of the Slieve Bloom Mountains in County Offaly, in the heart of Ireland (on 650 acres of woods). The Castle has had a long and turbulent history. The first Castle at Kinnitty was destroyed in 1209 and was later rebuilt by the Norman's in 1213. Later the Norman's were driven out by the powerful Gaelic clan, the O'Carrolls of Ely.  The history goes on from there but what we can tell you is, the Castle is beautiful.  We were allowed to meander through the various rooms and explore.  What fun.
This corner of St. Brendan's Church, in the town of Birr,  has a plaque commemorating of the World's First Motoring Fatality. Mary Ward was an Irish amateur scientist who was killed when she fell under the wheels of an experimental steam car built by her cousins. As the event occurred in 1869, she is the world's first known motor vehicle accident victim. This incident occurred years prior to the 1886 invention of the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, which is popularly regarded as the first automobile, neglecting the prior history of steam-powered motorcars.  History is found in unique places.
