ITALY- The Haerrs are coming...

We will board a plane today at 7 PM for Roma.  We will spend two nights outside The Eternal City at the Ostia Antica Park Hotel.  My friend, Guenda, manages the hotel and she has arranged for us to finally meet the entire Famiglia Perini.  We are so excited.

We will move into
La Terrazza Verde (our apartment) on October 1.  If you would liked to see our Umbrian home for the year, click on the link.  It is absolutely perfect and historic.  Our apartment is in the restored Rocca Dei Perugini (13th c. fortress) so we will be safe during our sojourn.  Wish us safe travels and please keep in touch.

Ciao for now party!

Our day was filled with laughs, some tears, a lot of hugs and hours of great friendship as we hosted our "Ciao for Now" party.

Over 60 photos were taken...all classic and worth putting on the blog.  I had to chose a slice that I thought captured it all.  I hope you agree!

I don't think love can be photographed, however.  What a exceptional night of amazing people, gathered, poolside to say "see you soon".   Steve and I feel so fortunate as far as friends go!!!  What a night!

never an opportunity."

Friends, food and fun...
Today, for my final Chick Flick we saw the movie, You Again.  We all agreed it was a very delightful movie and what's fun for me is that I've met Jamie Lee Curtis, the mom in the movie (hence her photo on this posting).
I met Jamie while at a book fair with Lynne.  She was gracious and funny.

The afternoon with my fabulous circle of friends is just one of the many ways I'm saying "ciao".  The countdown continues... we leave in four days.

A friendship can weather most things and thrive in thin soil;
but it needs a little mulch of letters and phone calls
and small, silly presents every so often-
just to save it from drying out completely.

I also had a fun conversation with Cloris Leachman once at Del Mar, and I was excited to see her also in this flick. She has made me laugh since "Mary Tyler Moore".

Reno Air Races from Steve

This weekend Chuck and his friend Peter Murphy flew into Reno for the 46th Annual Reno Air Races.  As we were in Tahoe anyway, Chuck invited me to join them for a weekend-o-plane-racing!

Well, as you might expect, three full days of burgers, beer, motors, airplanes, speed, more beer, and more airplane talk, and sunshine galore was the name of the game!

Our first order of business was the Awful Awful Burger at the Nugget Casino Bar in Reno.  While it sounds "awful" it was in fact a pretty darn good burger - rivaling anything out of 5 Guys.  A pleasant surprise for sure.  Then it was off to the Craps tables so Chuck and Peter could get in their "fix" and leave Reno $omething to remember them by...

The next two days were filled with, as I said, airplanes, speed, beer, track food, and sunshine... pretty much GUY STUFF.  While Denise was sad to be left out (by her brother's requirements of the weekend), I'm pretty sure she's better off for it.  While we all had a great time, it was probably too much testosterone and such for her.

It is now Monday, and I'm back in Tahoe for one more day of lakeside fun with my beautiful wife.  Heaven on earth!

Horseback riding overlooking Lake Tahoe...

I have wanted to go horseback riding for years, however, Steve has never been a willing participant.  Well, since he's in Reno for the weekend, I treated myself to a morning of equine excitement.  It could not have been a more idyllic day for a ride.

At Lake Tahoe, all trails lead to fun! Zephyr Cove Resort Stables guided horseback trail rides are a great way to experience the area's serenity and beauty. As you amble over forested scenic trails you'll enjoy amazing vistas of the crystal clear blue lake and the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains.  Rides offered are 1 hour, 1.5 hours, or 2 hours – all with friendly cowboys as your guide.

Lazy Lake Day...

The day was spent sightseeing around the lake.  It was such an exceptionally beautiful day we enjoyed seeing the shore from different viewpoints.  Absolutely glorious!

Lake Tahoe for the week...

Just in case you would like to know where you can find us...we're camping at Zephyr Cove, Nevada.

Zephyr Cove Resort at Lake Tahoe is the best of both worlds: the beauty of a pristine mountain lake setting combined with the thrill of new adventures.  Few places on earth rival Lake Tahoe for unspoiled beauty, making it a natural choice for people who love to explore the great outdoors through RV cruising and camping. Zephyr Cove's award-winning RV Park & Campground offers you the creature comforts of an outstanding facility and the serenity of our lovely wooded setting and lake views.

This week of relaxation has been planned for months and I'm so excited it's finally here.  Lake Tahoe has been a family favorite for years!

In the mountain, stillness surges up to explore its own height.
In the lake, movement stands still to contemplate its own depth.

Paso Robles for the night...

Corinne and Marlowe are friends we met in China and Yosemite (Corinne is Carol Jones' sister).  They have graciously welcomed us to camp amongst the grapes of their Frances James Vineyard.

Nestled in the vineyard is the Winemaker's Porch B & B... a magical place with two incredible hosts. What a wonderful night of friendship.  Dinner on the patio with great wine and interesting conversation made the day end in a truly spectacular way.

Kegan in moved in!

Well, it's official... Kegan has moved into Poly Canyon and oh my... what an awesome place.  Steve and I wish we could live there.  Incredible.

The spectacular, recently completed Poly Canyon Village Apartment development houses 2700 continuing student residents on campus. Poly Canyon Village, complete with apartments, amenities and restaurants, spans approximately 30 acres and is located at the northeast corner of Cal Poly at the base of picturesque Poly Canyon. Within nine 4 and 5 story buildings, 618 furnished apartment units nestle around a large plaza, bustling with student activities, dining, and retail vendors. The central retail plaza includes Einstein Bros. Bagels, Peet's Coffee and Tea, Jamba Juice, and the Village Market. This state-of-the-art complex includes a community center, swimming pool, study rooms, knowledge center, and conference room. Throughout the Poly Canyon Village Apartment complex there are 4 floorplans, housing 4 to 6 students in private and shared bedrooms.

AND, once a week maid service of the 'common' areas.  Life, for a college student, doesn't get much better than that.  He's a happy guy and we're so happy for him!

Cal Poly Day...

After saying our "ciao for now" to Brenton and Christy, we went to Cal Poly for a pre-move in with Kegan.  His friends, Rohan and Krisna, were already there and they have allowed the majority of Kegan's stuff to be stored in their dorm room... a huge help for his official move in day- Tuesday!

We then went to Downtown SLO for dinner at Firestone Restaurant.  It was nice to get to meet Kegan's friends and spend time strolling the town before the craziness of move in happens.  It has been a very wonderful weekend of family.  I've loved every moment.

Morro Bay for the end of the day...

Our very full day concluded back in Morro Bay.  Shopping at the Farmer's Market, dinner in the campground and a family movie night was the end of a great day.

Hearst Castle for the afternoon...

We spent the afternoon in the town of San Simeon, touring Hearst Castle.  William Randolf Hearst is too complex to put in the blog.  The man and his visions were incredible.  When planning this home, he envisioned very comfortable accommodations. His simple instructions to famed San Francisco architect Julia Morgan in 1919: "Miss Morgan, we are tired of camping out in the open at the ranch in San Simeon and I would like to build a little something."

Hearst and Morgan's collaboration became one of the world's greatest showplaces. By 1947, Hearst and Morgan had created an estate of 165 rooms and 127 acres of gardens, terraces, pools and walkways.

Seeing it all is too much to do in one day so we decided on Tour Two which focused on the architectural elements and vast art collection in the main house, or Casa Grande. Featured rooms on this tour included; the Doge's Suite, "The Cloisters" which are four guest rooms flanked by open walkways, the Library, the Gothic Suite which occupies the entire third floor and includes Hearst's impressive private suite, library and office, and the Kitchen. During the Castle explore, we learned a great deal about the man and his accomplishments.  While we have been here before, this specific tour was a first for us and we all agreed it was amazing!
