Lake Tahoe's New Pro Hockey Team

It's not often your little town gets its own professional hockey team. Tonight we learned just who we are going to be rooting for!

"Lake Tahoe is now home to an ECHL expansion team who will play 36 games for the 2024-2025 season.  The team is owned, in part, by Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow."
The reveal was to happen at 6 PM and the suspense was mounting as we all lined up outside the Tahoe Blue Events Center.
The arena was buzzing. Everyone seemed eager for professional hockey to come to town.

We were even offered a delicious buffet.
We were joined by Mary Jo and Cyndi which made the evening even more magical.
The Name and Logo Reveal was accomplished by showing a very powerful, audience-pleasing video. Steve captured it all and it's worth watching (link).
“We are so incredibly excited to introduce our team’s name for our fans and for the region,” said Tim Tebow, “We look forward to bringing people together for fun family entertainment, as well as making a positive impact in this community.”
Drumroll... the new team is called the Tahoe Knight Monsters. The inspiration of the name and logo originated from local input and nominations from over 1,000 fans. The area has a long-standing folklore of a creature called Tahoe Tessie, a fictional being that resides in Lake Tahoe. It's nice they're paying homage to her! Fun.

Photo opportunities were everywhere. I loved it all.

After all the announcements ended, the dancing began! Our musical delights came from local band, The Residents! Awesome.

Kevin Boryczki, General Manager of the Tahoe Blue Events Center said,  “The atmosphere inside the arena is going to be electric for both the fans and players.” It already is, Kevin. It already is! I 💙 Lake Tahoe.

Our 162 Year Old Forgotten Bookmark

I've spoken about Forgotten Bookmarks before. They are the treasures people leave behind in a discarded book. This one has to be the most special and certainly the oldest.

Our older son is really into the Civil War, as of late, and Steve found this awesome book at the recent Friends of the Library Book Sale. Inscribed To David, Love Mom 1990, it also held a relic from the War of the Rebellion.
The three page letter, while in good condition, is difficult to decipher due to the author's penmanship. But here's what I do know. Sent to W.M.'s niece, it was written on December 14th, 1861. In it W. describes exactly where he is, Salem, MO. The soldier is part of the Union Illinois Volunteers 13th Regiment, Illinois Infantry. As a side note, this regiment lost six Officers and 61 Enlisted men who were killed and mortally wounded, along with two Officers and 123 Enlisted men who perished by disease.

Prior to the letter being written, the Civil War brought Salem a brief moment of fame. A small detachment of Union soldiers from Rolla was housed in Salem (the letter is postmarked Rolla). At dawn on Dec. 3, 1861, they were surprised by Confederates. A lively skirmish ensued and the Rebels were fought off. This "victory" loomed large since the Confederates had dominated early in the war.

W. also talks of the being "quartered in a log house. Quite a good house with a fireplace. In the end, we woke up to a rousing fire at night which gives light enough to read and to crack nuts by."

"This morning we raised the 'Ala Flag' on a flag staff in the Court House Square. We ran up the colors and fired a salute of three guns from one of our twelve pound howitzers, at sunrise this morning." Interestingly, In 1861, as Alabama left the Union, the Alabama Secession Convention adopted its first official flag. Designed by a group of women from Montgomery, it became known as the “Republic of Alabama Flag.” It only flew for a month before being replaced by the Confederate national flag. I'm not quite sure why Union soldiers would raise the other guys' flag. I have many questions.

W. writes about his quarter mates and where the officers were staying. He tells of harnessing the artillery horses with a full battery and having the field pieces in position just in case but no "Leesh" came in sight.

He ends his letter with "I don't know if this war news will be interesting to you but there is not much else here to write about."

What a tantalizing find. I only wish I could learn more about its author. One never knows what one will find in a book. Makes you want to start hunting, doesn't it?

Cutting Our Christmas Tree...

Armed with our $10 Christmas Tree permit, Steve, Cyndi and I headed out into the forest to hunt for our perfect ornament holder.

The morning gloom cleared and made a trek through the woods idyllic.

Steve and I prefer a 'tabletop' tree. Our hunt wasn't a long one.

Cyndi came armed with a powerful, albeit tiny, chainsaw. We made quick work of the task at hand.

The tradition of cutting one's own Christmas tree was a new one for us, but since moving to Tahoe, it has become one of our most treasured. Having a friend there, to share in the adventure, makes it that much more sweeter.
“The Christmas tree is a symbol of love, not money.
There's a kind of glory to them when they're all lit up
that exceeds anything all the money in the world could buy."

Tea with the Girls...

Wanting to share my love of going to tea with all the ladies of my family (there were four adults and my three granddaughters) we spent our Saturday at Muir's Tea Room & Café.

"Located in a lavishly restored historic Queen Anne Victorian, Muir’s is an extraordinary Tea Room in the English/Scottish tradition. Inspired by legendary Scottish born conservationist and tea lover, John Muir, Muir’s combines the beauty of nature with whimsical decor, a stunning cottage garden, and delicious artisan food. Using organic and fresh ingredients, our esteemed English Chef oversees our wonderful team of cooks and bakers to create plant-based savories and desserts that are unparalleled in their unique taste and presentation. Our English Farmer grows produce especially for Muir’s at his organic biodiverse Sebastopol Farm. Muir’s signature scones and sweets are baked fresh daily and our popular finger sandwiches are made moments before being served."
Each month is a different theme. November just happened to be Muir's 9th Annual Harry Potter Extravaganza.

"Join us as Muir's becomes a Portkey to take you to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Feast on Sumptuous High Teas that feature all of the favorite savories and treats from Harry Potter- all house made in our kitchen with extra magic and love!"

Not being a fan of J.K. Rowling's epic tale, most of the story tie-ins were lost on me, though each of the delicacies were very tasty.  We began with several bottomless pots of tea and Weasley's Dragon Roasted Nuts. An Herbology Salad followed.
A tray then arrived loaded with savories: Harry's Favorite Pumpkin Pasty, Hagrid's Wild Stoat Tea Sandwich, Molly Weasley's Beans on Toast with Burrow Garden Tomatoes and Gillyweed Pesto, Dobby's Everything but the Kitchen Sink Puff Pastry, and Hogwarts Express Tea Trolley Cucumber Finger Sandwich.
The Scone & Desserts consisted of Hagrid's Rock Cake with House Elf Made "clotted cream" and imported English Preserves, Professor Minerva McGonagall's Cauldron Cupcake, Honeyduke's Cookie, and Hogwart's Greenhouse Fruit.
My younger daughter-in-law celebrated her birthday with her Mom there, too. What fun! It was definitely a unique experience for all.
"Hagrid howled still more loudly.
Harry and Hermione looked at Ron to help them.
'Er-shall I make a cup of tea?' said Ron. Harry stared at him.
'It's what my mum does whenever someone's upset,'
Ron muttered, shrugging."
-J. K. Rowling

... "Or whenever someone wants to enjoy
another's company in a most delightful way!"

Our Thankful Thanksgiving...

Fourteen of us gathered at our younger son's in-laws' for a day of family. Since I don't post images of my grandchildren, you'll just have to imagine how adorable the holiday was with the little ones.

Afterwards, we headed to the beach to burn off the pumpkin pie and witness the sun setting on our wonderful holiday together.

He who thanks but with the lips
Thanks but in part,
The full, the true Thanksgiving
Comes from the heart.

Jeremy Hara's "Cacophonous Colors"

Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) has an incredible art gallery, The Haldan. I have be wowed here quite a few times, today's visit was no exception... WOW.

The Gallery describes Jeremy Hara's work as "gloriously colorful and irreverent." I describe it as indescribable! He labels himself as a multi-talented artist. His work has been described as witty, ironic, and refreshingly different. I agree 100%. Oh, and it's fun.

What absolutely blew my mind was his primary paint of choice comes from a can!

Each piece is so unique and truly showcases his talents.

Even his custom spray cans offer a varied view of his world.
His talents in miniatures is impressive.
Kapitol (pill bottles, miniature dollars, gelatin capsules) intrigued with its commentary.
Speaking of miniatures, this just might be my favorite piece in the exhibit. Microcosm is an architectural model of the Haldan Gallery and Jeremy's solo show. If you look closely and then look at the art displayed within this post, you will see that Jeremy recreated each work for this miniature reproduction.

There is an even tinier Microcosm recreated within the original piece. So dang cool.

It's hard to grasp that these works are intricately created with spray paint. They really must be seen to be believed.
The painting I would own is Monet Monet Monet Money which was painted in 2020. According to his website, this was a prolific year for Jeremy. He was laid off his job of over 20 years, became an artist full time, and painted over 100 paintings. The rest as they say is history.
I enjoyed Cacophonous Colors so enthusiastically, Steve wants to see it too so before it leaves on December 8th, we'll be returning for another wowing!
