Happy #100 Gian Carlo Menotti...

Today, the town was celebrating the Anno Menottiano, the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great composer and found of the both Spoleto Festivals, Gian Carlo Menotti.  We began the day getting to know the man better by touring his home which is now an incredible museum.

An evening concert in ancient
San Nicolò Church by Varna International Chamber Orchestra filled the air with beautiful Bach, Mendelssohn and Hindemith.  After a dinner at home, we made our way, along with the crowds to Piazza Duomo.

The Concerto Per Gian Carlo, in the square below his bedroom window, was spectacular.  A warm summer breeze, an unbelievably beautiful setting, a historical cathedral for a back drop and over one hundred
musicians playing together, perfectly, what better way to celebrate someone's birthday!

I believe Gian Carlo would have loved this day of tribute.  I know I certainly did.

Melody is a form of remembrance.
It must have a quality of inevitability in our ears.
