The Blues Brothers in Spoleto...
The summer after I graduated high school, I went to several concerts and one of them was to see The Blues Brothers.
On June 20, 1980, the movie, "The Blues Brothers" was released in America (it was one of the most expensive films ever made at the time). The reviews were staggeringly bad, but business was brisk and word of mouth was good (all my 18 year old friends loved it). The same day the film was released, The Blues Brothers Show Band led by musical director Paul Shaffer (who had not yet been hired to front David Letterman's late-night band) hit the road for a 13-city concert tour to promote the film. The tour would end in Los Angeles at the Universal Amphitheater with a seven-night stand beginning July 26 where I gleefully watch John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd and the Blues Brothers Band recreate music and comedic magic from the movie while entertaining us under the summer night sky.
Now, over 30 years later, my son and his buddy got to live the 80s, if just for a few hours. Under a balmy, full moon lit night, in the classically Spoleto Piazza Duomo, they experienced the Original Blues Brothers Band at their only Umbrian gig of their Italian tour. John's gone and Dan wasn't there but the magic of the movie and music lives on!Jake: It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas,
half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.
Elwood: Hit it!
