St. Francis and so much more...

Our day began at Ristorante La Stalla, in the forest surrounding Assisi.  After a delicious fueling up, we explored the sights and introduced St. Francis to Brenton.  Interesting side note, Christy wrote a press release for Saint Francis Couture, a really humane shoe company, and already knew about the patron saint of animals from that job.

We spent the day popping in and out of churches, sipping espresso in the piazza and just enjoying being together.  It was an exhaustingly fun day.

Some additional history of Assisi:

The church in the 5th photo is called Santa Maria above Minerva because it is constructed upon the ancient Roman temple dedicated to Minerva, queen of wisdom and of peace in the pagan era.

The six splendid Corinthian columns and the entire façade are still intact after nearly 2025 years. The pilgrim climbs the steps to the entrance and is deeply moved. Even the lateral walls of the building are well preserved, but they are only visible from the outside.

Assisi became part of the comune of Rome in 295 BC, having been victorious over the Italian confederacy. In the year 88 BC, the city became a "Municipium romanum" (Roman municipality), with all the rights and regulations afforded to Rome.

During the reign of the emperor Augustus, the city of Assisi was transformed into a well organized residential and touristic center (during the years 28-25 BC).

Beautiful! I love the HUGE columns in front of the church. It is amazing that they could create such grandiose buildings with almost no technology; just lots of people, money, and a remarkable idea.
