Parking in Italy...a lesson
When we were in Assisi with our large group of friends, Mark was driving a rented van and the agency did not go over the intricacies of parking in Italy. When we left the church, Steve went running with arms gesturing to get the attention of the traffic polizia hovering around the van.
Some parking here is obvious. If there's a meter you feed it. Some, not so obvious and based on the honor system or Parking Disc (disco orario).
If the sign indicates that the parking is time-limited, you need to use the very important parking disc. There was one in the rental van, we just didn't think to tell Mark it was necessary. To use the parking disc, you spin the wheel so that the arrow indicates the time you arrived (ora di arrivo) and then place it inside the car, in the windshield, so it can be seen by the parking police.
I think it's a great system as long as you remember to set the disco orario. Forgetfulness is not forgiven in the Italian parking system!

This is why I try to avoid driving in other countries. Vacations are supposed to be stress free! Plus, you don't have to limit yourself on the vino. :)
