Hiking in the hills...
Since Kegan and Monica are hiking the Dolomiti, beginning Friday, we thought we'd get them moving with a walk up our local mountain.
Reading the signs posted by Club Aplino Italiano, we followed a series of small red/white/red flag signals which indicate the various paths. The flags, have been painted on tree trunks, rocks, walls and wherever they might be visible to hikers traveling in both directions. Interestingly, times the hikes should take are also indicated on these signs. Each one I pass I realize how inferior I am because there is absolutely no way I can complete the task in the time allotted. Kegan and Monica flew past me on our trek to St. Francis' sanctuary and Sacred Woods.

A circular walk from Spoleto (3½ hours - ca.10 km)
Today you will do a ring walk on Monteluco. 'Lucu' means sacred woods and indeed early Christian hermits, of the Benedictine Order, were already living here in the 5th century. Later the Franciscans also built a monastery on Monteluco. You can still visit the oratory dating back to the time of St.Francis.
