Buckminster Fuller's Spoletosphere...

From atop of Spoleto, nestled amongst the red mottled tiled roofs, stands out a large modern creation.  Described as a mix of old and new, Buckminster Fuller's contribution to the 1967 Festival of Two Worlds, the Spoletosphere, has always seemed out of place to me.

Last night, I ventured into its space for the first time and upon researching this futuristic man, I found a new appreciation for this geodesic dome and him.

According to Central Opera Service Bulletin- May-June 1967:

Another American artist participating in the American-Italian Festival for the first time will be architect Buckminster Fuller. He is designing a 350-seat, domed theatre called Spoleto-Sphere, which will be used for plays, recitals and art exhibitions. It will open on July 1. It will be realized with the assistance of the Aluminum Company of America, Southern Illinois University, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Mr. Fuller designed the dome shaped American Pavilion at Expo '67.
