A Rendezvous at Sharkey's Casino...
We have an author, Karen Dustman, coming to Tahoe to present her book and unfortunately I have had plans for months, for that same day, and can't attend. So today we met for coffee at a cool little spot.
Milos S. “Sharkey” Begovich, opened his namesake casino in 1971. Sharkey’s Nugget Casino, was famous for its collection of Western memorabilia and an endless array of kitschy collectibles, including some awesome vintage slot machines displayed in the cafe.
I know Steve and I will return to dine here. Good food at reasonable prices with a whole lot of interesting things to look at. It is just my kind of place. Great suggestion by Karen.
And if you are anywhere near Tahoe, you really should swing by the South Lake Tahoe Library and meet this interesting woman yourself.
Saturday, April 21, 1 PM Genoa Cemetery, Markleeville Ghosts & More. Join local authors Karen Dustman, Laurie Hickey, and photographer Judy Wickwire to hear stories from their recently-released book, The Old Genoa Cemetery. The first in a four-volume series, this fascinating book takes readers on a tour of the southern-most section of this historic cemetery, and honors the lives of some of Carson Valley's earliest and most prominent settlers who are buried here. As an added plus, Karen will also share stories from her second newly-released book, Markleeville Ghost Tales -- a collection of the fascinating, true stories about ghost sightings told and re-told by the locals in this small frontier town. Join us for a fun and fascinating afternoon! Free and open to all.
“I have always enjoyed cemeteries.
Altars for the living as well as resting places for the dead,
they are entryways, I think, to any town or city,
the best places to become acquainted with the tastes of the inhabitants,
both present and gone.”
