Symphonies and skylines...

Again we were allowed to usher for the The Spoleto Orchestra, who performed magnificently: Beethoven / Symphony No. 8, Mozart / Symphony, No. 35 Wagner / Siegfried Idyll with two encores that had the entire house on its feet (one being Le nozze di Figaro).

The standing ovation was in honor of the fact it happened to be the final performance of Maestro Villaume, a conductor who continued to entertain as well as orchestrate a breathtaking ensemble.  At one point, while in a serious part of a piece, someone could not stop coughing.  He elegantly took out his handkerchief and waved it in the air, as a not so subtle hint, which made the audience break out in great chuckles.  It was the lightness of that act and the knowledge of his departure which made the evening even more special.

Ushering for Steve and I, while a volunteer position, is a serious position.  We believe we are the faces of the Festival and really tried to be professional.  We are usually some of the first to arrive and last to leave.  Last night, Karl, the volunteer coordinator approached us and told us the house managers have commented to him, about the great job we're doing.  I told him to remember that because we would like to come back in a couple of years and do it all again.  It has been extraordinary.

The evening ended at "Charleston's ultimate rooftop oasis", Pavilion Bar, where we had a drink overlooking the harbor and bridges while enjoying the cool 87 degree breezes (yes, 87 at 10 PM- welcome to the south).  We had a delightful conversation with a group of Dutch women who were at the concert with us.  I can't begin to explain the magicalness of this opportunity and town!
