Family and fireflies...
For the next two nights, we are camped in Prince William Forest Park, a place where history and nature unite! Prince William Forest Park is an oasis of natural beauty and human history located only 35 miles south of Washington, DC. 37 miles of hiking trails and 21 miles of bicycle-accessible roads and trails traverse this 15,000 acre piedmont forest. Beneath its canopy lies evidence of human history reaching back to 8,000 B.C.
We've chosen this location for two reasons. It is the closest campground to The National Museum of the Marine Corps which we plan to spend the entire day tomorrow (we were here two years ago and didn't have enough time to see it all). And tonight, we met my brother, Chuck, half way in the historic town of Warrenton for dinner along with, my sister-in-law, Hazel, her mom, Gram and my three delightful great nieces, who we had the pleasure of spending time with in Indiana, last month (Maddie, Bella and Gracie).
Dinner was at Claire's at the Depot (1908), a restored train depot that has been an award winning restaurant for years. It was great to reconnect with my nieces. When I said to Bella, "I don't know when I will see you again, she said, "You don't meet someone when you're seven and never see them again." Wise beyond her years. Each of them tug at my heartstrings.
When we returned home, we were entertained by fireflies. What a unique experience that I'm certain people here take for granted but makes us embarrassingly excited every time we witness their illumination! It's truly the simple things in life that mean so much!
