"Conservation is a state of harmony between men and land," Aldo Leopold

Last quarter Kegan took, and thoroughly enjoyed, Wildlife Conservation Biology.  In it, he had to read The Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold.  Considered by many as the father of wildlife management and of the United States' wilderness system, he was a conservationist, forester, philosopher, educator, writer, and outdoor enthusiast. The man was very forward thinking and if you have not read his incredible book, you should.

So that's how we ended up in Baraboo, Wisconsin driving down Rustic Road 49.  In 1935, Aldo and his family initiated their own ecological restoration experiment on a worn-out farm along the Wisconsin River. Planting thousands of pine trees, restoring prairies, and documenting the ensuing changes in the flora and fauna further informed and inspired Leopold.  The family would live in an old chicken coop, summers and weekends.  When I first heard this, I was somewhat in disbelief then we stood in his prairie... meandered through his pines and delighted in the sounds of the birds his family delighted in.  What an incredible experience

Leopold defined conservation as a way of life in which land does well for its inhabitants,
citizens do well by their land, and both end up better by reason of partnership.
