Art comes in many forms...
Kojiro Tomita stated, "It has been said that art is a tryst, for in the joy of it maker and beholder meet." Today we met art, in various forms, all over Charleston.
While waiting for our first ushering assignment, we had time to explore the Halsey Gallery. There we happened upon an Art-o-mat machine, a retired cigarette vending machine that has been converted to vend art. There are 82 active machines in various locations throughout
the country and one happens to be in Charleston. What does one get from an Art-o-mat? The experience of pulling the knob alone is quite a thrill, but you also walk away with an original work of art. What an easy way to become an art collector.
We then happened onto Nick Cave's Soundsuits. Weirdly intriguing these wearable mixed-media sculptures incorporate every material imaginable to make sounds unique to each garment. A very cool and happy tryst.
Our afternoon passed delightfully while observing Noël Coward's play Present Laughter an almost three hour long foray into the life of a successful, self-absorbed actor. Originally written in 1939, it seemed very current and was quite fun to escape to.
A different comedy Lone Star completed our ushering trifecta. This was a comedy revolving around one night in the life of former high school hot shot Roy, his brother Ray, Lone Star beer, and Hank Williams music. There were laughs, soul searching and talented young actors. "Roy" is sitting with us in the last photo. Life is so fantastic in Charleston!
