Another discarded treasure found in a donated book is this very cool invite to some Phi Zeta Sorority events 83 years ago. Wow, right?

I scanned this collection with a penny so you could grasp how small the envelope was that held the little booklet detailing all the upcoming events (a progressive dinner, rush parties, something called a Michigan party, a dance- held at the Uptown Studio- from 10 to 1 on Oct. 2 and even a Jamboree). What thoroughly intrigued me was the address: 655 19th City. That's it. What City? Interestingly, it's Des Moines and my parents lived there then, though they were only 12. Fun connection.
Of course I had to learn more about the recipient- Lorraine Frances Elder (1918-2014). This is a very long and very detailed write up, as it is her official obituary, but I thought it was worth the share (as published).

Miss Elder was born in Des Moines, Iowa to Kathyrne T. Elder and Edward E. Elder. Lorraine was an only child, but lived an exciting and busy life with her parents. Edward was a professional baseball player for Bismark, South Dakota. Edward was also a master carpenter who built roller coasters and specialty rides in the Iowa area. The family traveled to a great extent in Lorraine's younger years. They attended baseball games and visited the roller coasters and parks on a regular basis to assure their correct operation and maintenance.

When Lorraine graduated from high school she went to school to become a legal secretary. She worked for several lawyers in the area. Lorraine enjoyed volunteering as a "Pink Lady" at several hospitals. It was at one of those hospitals that she met Dr. Leonard C. Hallendorf who had just finished an internship with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Leonard and Lorraine started dating and developed a special relationship which lead to their marriage on September 17, 1944 in Des Moines, Iowa. Eventually they decided to move to California, so Leonard could establish a medical practice in the bay area, specifically in the city of San Mateo, Ca. The move was significant to them because Lorraine's parents Edward and Kathyrne would accompany them to California.

Leonard and Lorraine, their family of four children and the parents moved into their new home. A new extension was added to the home as a living area for Kathyrne and Edward. Lorraine was busy raising a family but also worked in her husband's medical office as the office administrator, secretary and bookkeeper.

Lorraine and Leonard were very active members of the Elks Lodge in San Mateo. Lorraine and Leonard very active with their churches; Saint Catherine Church, St. Matthew's Church, St. Bartholomew Church and St. Charles Church. Lorraine belonged to The Catholic Daughter's. Leonard belonged to The Knights of Columbus. Leonard also served as the school doctor for Serra High School in San Mateo.

Lorraine and Leonard enjoyed many wonderful years of travel with their family and friends throughout the world. Leonard became ill and passed away on March 14, 1982. Lorraine moved to San Carlos with her mother Kathyrne. Kathyrne passed away on May 13, 1988.

When Leonard passed away in March of 1982, Lorraine realized she needed to establish a new career to support her family. Lorraine went to school and received her Real Estate License. Lorraine went on to receive her Brokers License. Lorraine worked in real estate for over 25 years and was a real professional, and was devoted and dedicated to her clients. She enjoyed her new found career very much.

Lorraine started a whole new life when friends introduced her to Robert P. Jones who had lost his wife several years earlier. They established a special relationship and married in late 1985. During the 13 years of their marriage Bob and Lorraine enjoyed golf, bridge and dominos but their greatest love was travel. Bob and Lorraine had sailed on 28 cruises and in the process visited over 60 countries. Bob's health started to decline and he passed away New Year's Eve 1998.

Lorraine stayed in her home for awhile with some live in assistance then eventually as her health declined moved into care homes, in San Carlos, San Mateo and eventually Mariner's Green in Redwood Shores. Lorraine was a devoted wife, mother, grandma and great grandma and a very special friend to all whose lives she touched.

Sounds like Lorraine is someone we should have known and now we do! Fun.

I like how with both men she developed "special relationships" first and then got married!
