Way Back Wednesday: 2009
When I received a wedding invitation recently, it gave me the opportunity to reminisce about our French student who summered with us 14 ½ years ago.
How we met Odrey is a meet cute. Her mom's cousin, Odile, was in our Italian class and she knew we had a long history of hosting exchange students. Odrey wanted to come to America and immerse herself in English. We were very excited to have her.For those who don't know, hosting/travel guiding is my forte. We gathered her at LAX and hit the Hollywood ground running.
First stop: Grauman's Chinese Theatre and a visit with Marilyn Monroe.
There was a great deal happening on the Walk of Fame that day.
Michael Jackson had just died on June 25th.
As had actress Farrah Fawcett. There were a number of memorials to both as we strolled Hollywood Blvd.
For Independence Day, we went to a Padres vs Dodgers Game at Petco Park. The Padres won and we were happy fans, indeed.
For the July 4th Fireworks show, we had special tickets to watch from the deck of the U.S.S. Midway. What an exceptional, patriotic vantage point.
The boys wanted to go shooting so we girls tagged along, doing our best Charlie's Angels pose in honor of Farrah.
Then we played bilingual Scrabble (she in English, us in French). Merveilleux!
We loved this girl. Her laugh was infectious and she was so easy to host. We had the opportunity to stay with her and her Mom in their home in Cannes in 2011. She and I met up again in 2013 when she was in L.A. on business. We are long overdue for another meeting.
So this is the woman she became. She returned to the original spelling of her name, Audrey, and met the man of her dreams, Mathieu. Interestingly, their wedding is happening when we will be in the South of France yet we have already made plans to be with friends on the same date. That said, we've made promises to connect before the newlyweds head out on their honeymoon. Fingers are crossed.
I just had to share this part of Audrey's wedding invitation. "Dress Code: Elegant Cocktail Outfit in terracotta colors leaving the privilege of White and Ivory to the Bride." And just in case one isn't sure of terracotta a helpful color chart was included. Oh man, so French.
Les amis : une famille dont on a choisi les membres.
English Translation: "Friends: a family whose members have been chosen."
