A Return to the Birch Aquarium...
I had an early morning appointment in La Jolla so afterward we headed to the Birch Aquarium to marvel at marine life.
"Birch Aquarium features the groundbreaking work of Scripps Oceanography and UC San Diego scientists through innovative exhibits and events."It seems there is always something new to discover.
We actually came to see this interesting creature. "During the holiday season, there’s nothing better than cozying up with some chocolate chip cookies and a warm glass of milk. At Birch Aquarium, we have an underwater version of this cookie — the Chocolate Chip Sea Star!"
This sea star gets its name from its dark brown pointed disks that resemble chocolate chips. When they’re first born, these sea stars are only about the size of a single chocolate chip, but over time they’ll grow to be about the size of a round cake pan. These two were currently the size of a generously portioned cookie. How very cool.
The two-story Giant Kelp Forest gave us the opportunity to come face-to-face with not only each other but also with Leopard Sharks, bright orange Garibaldi, Moray Eels, and even an endangered Giant Sea Bass.
A highlight is always a visit with the Little Blue Penguins which are known for their small size and iconic blue colors. How little is little? They’re the smallest species of penguins and stand at about 10 inches tall and weigh up to 3 pounds. Not all penguins live in snow! Little Blue Penguins are native to the coastal dunes and rocky shores of Southern Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. Maybe in our future travels we'll see them in their natural habitat.
No trip to La Jolla is complete without getting to the shore. Oh man, I do love all things beachy.
