Calvary Catholic Cemetery's Chapel

Prominently perched upon one of the tallest hills in Santa Rosa, sits this amazing architectural masterpiece, Madelyne's Chapel at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Built in 1960, in definitely a mid-century modern style, I'm surprised that I can find nothing about its creator.

I do have a guess at who might have financed it. Interred close to the chapel is Henry Trione and his wife, Madelyne. The “new” Santa Rosa that came after the WWII’s end brought growth and new leadership, including the town’s first mortgage broker, you guessed it- Henry Trione. He was destined to become one of the city’s leading philanthropists. Mr. Trione arrived in Santa Rosa in 1947 and made fortunes in home mortgage lending, timber, wine, and even owning a piece of the Oakland Raiders football team. Look at the spelling of his wife's name and that of the chapel. What do you think about my guess?
We didn't have a lot of time to explore but what we did see intrigued us. I want to return to wander about the graves and meet more of those who reside there.

Poor William Togni. Born in Alaska in 1918, he passed away in Santa Rosa at the age of 15. There are no other Tognis buried at this cemetery though there are several people with that surname still in Santa Rosa and Alaska. One such Togni is Philip Togni. Mr. Togni is a vintner and two bottles of his 1996 Cab are currently for sale for $325 each. Interesting.

“I have always enjoyed cemeteries.
Altars for the living as well as resting places for the dead,
they are entryways, I think, to any town or city,
the best places to become acquainted with the tastes of the inhabitants,
both present and gone.”
