Rainbow Oaks for Julie's Birthday...
A perfect halfway spot, between our two homes, is Rainbow Oaks Restaurant.
What a trip to a bygone era!I arrived early so I got gas at an ancient pump. Wild.
Originally established in 1946, it reopened in 2009 with new owners who remodeled it. They painstakingly restored the interior of the historic building to become a gathering place for locals, travelers and bikers to "engage in fine, yet affordable dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner serving traditional American cuisine."
A surprise for me was not only the huge portions (my salad fed Steve and me at dinner) but at noon, everyone stops what they're doing and stands for the National Anthem, played over a loud speaker. It was very cool and a bit emotional. Julie, by the way, is the previously mentioned, in the last three blog posts, 37-year-old son's awesome mother-in-law.
I do love to eat in history (postcard circa 60s). The area, previously known as Vallecitos, (little valley), was renamed Rainbow in the late 1880s, after Mr. J.P.M. Rainbow, who bought a homestead there.
As they say, "Location, Location, Location." It certainly worked for us. What a delightful birthday kickoff.
