Tahoe History Talks on the Beach
Lakeview Commons became the venue for fantastic history lessons, presented by the Lake Tahoe Historical Society, when meeting indoors wasn't happening. How wonderful that the tradition continues.
Gayle and David Woodruff returned with a living history presentation titled, Those That Survived. Described as, "The tale of the Donner Party’s desperate ordeal in the Sierra Nevada Mountains that winter of 1846 and '47, is much more that the gruesome and desperate acts that were resorted to by some. The majority of that forlorn group of Argonauts survived, thanks to the heroic and super-human efforts of a few selfless souls. We adopt the characters of James and Margret Reed, who kept their entire family alive, and aided in the rescue efforts of dozens more. A great tale of humankind."The Woodruffs did an amazing job of sharing the Reeds' story. We felt the hopefulness followed by despair. I was truly on the edge of my seat.
James D. Houston wrote of Reed, "That story is a saga of people pushed to the limits of human endurance and beyond, pushed there, in part, by their own divisiveness, some poor decisions, and a run of very bad luck. Reed's role in this grim, near-mythic episode has given him a place in the history of western settlement. Yet accounts of his deeds seldom include the extraordinary good luck that came to him not long afterward, luck he shared with numerous others, the settlers and deck hands and dreamers and schemers who happened, by whatever means, to be in California by 1848."
What a night of history. What a location (not far from where it all occurred). What a presentation. What an audience of people we haven't seen for far too long. I 💙 Lake Tahoe.
