My New Favorite Cookbook

I picked up this 1957, First Edition, of Betty Crocker's Cook Book for Boys and Girls, for 29¢ at Spokane's Goodwill Outlet.

For those aware of my culinary skills, this book is right up my alley.
"Dear Boys and Girls,

Cooking is an adventure, as you'll find out when you use these recipes. On the opposite page you can meet the twelve boys and girls who tested the recipes in their own kitchens at home.

It's really easy to cook, once you know how. You'll be trying all sorts of things Pigs in Blankets, Hot Fudge Pudding, Jolly Breakfast Ring- even a supper for the family some night to give mother a holiday.

If you use your cook book often I can promise you real fun and lots of good things to eat.

Sincerely, Betty Crocker"
This book is full of wonderful, kid-friendly cooking advice including: cakemaking tips, kitchen safety, how to measure, table settings, and cooking terms.
The simple recipes, darling illustration, and very vintage photographs make this cookbook truly delightful... a slice of Americana. I love it.

Kitchen Manners
BEFORE YOU START TO COOK
  • Choose a time to suit your mother, so you won't be in her way.
  • Wear an apron to keep your dress or blue jeans clean and be sure to wash your hands.
  • Read your recipe and all directions very carefully. Look at the pictures. They tell you how to do each step.
  • Put all your ingredients on a tray. Then set each one off as you use it.
  • On another tray put all the tools and pans you'll need.
WHEN YOU'RE THROUGH
  • Have you left anything out? Read your recipe again and be sure.
  • Is everything spic and span? Then your mother will be glad to have you cook again.
“While she loved the whole idea of cooking elaborate meals,
her forte was in the reading of cookbooks.”
