Mystery Authors at the SLT Library
Almost 50 people gathered at the South Lake Tahoe Library for an afternoon of authors!
"Local mystery writers Gary Thomas Edwards, Lisa Michelle, and Robert Max will share their experiences in becoming authors and read passages from their books."Gary Thomas Edwards was the first to share. His book, Knitting In Jamaica weaves its way through history and the origins of knitting, as well as the art of distilling Scotch whisky. Join Sean Morrison, Kaylee Wu, and Pistachio as they travel from San Francisco to Jamaica and, finally, to the lush Scottish Highlands, trying their best to stay alive while figuring out what the hell is going on and why people around them are being murdered. To hear Gary read, especially when his character had a wonderful Scottish brogue, was very entertaining.
Lisa Michelle cracked me up. I even asked her if she was going to write an autobiography. Her life story would be a page turner. She is an award-winning author, screenwriter, and filmmaker. The former rodeo cowgirl and mother of two, makes her home in the Sierra Nevada. Her mostly true fiction brings meaning from the struggles of life that will leave readers somewhere between laughing and crying and at times both. Michelle writes from experience about the people and places she knows best, giving her characters an undeniable authenticity. Right?! By the way, this was her first public book reading and she did great.
NY Native, Robert Max, has applied his 10+ years of experience in law enforcement in New York to his writing. This has helped to insure that the police work in his books is accurate. Over the years, in New York and in California, in classrooms and in the street, he's learned much about life and death, about human nature, about what motivates people to do the things they do, about love and loss, and about writing which enriches his novels. So interesting.
We even had the opportunity to meet some of the talented members of the Tahoe Writers Works, a group of writers, poets, and other individuals who have a passion for strong creative writing. TWW hosts a writing workshop that helps all level of writers to hone their craft. There is no obligation other than an exceptional love of the written word. How very cool.
I am continuously impressed by the amount of talent which resides in our little town. What an inspiring afternoon of writers and those who love them!
“Who wants to become a writer? And why? Because it’s the answer to everything. … It’s the streaming reason for living. To note, to pin down, to build up, to create, to be astonished at nothing, to cherish the oddities, to let nothing go down the drain, to make something, to make a great flower out of life, even if it’s a cactus.” —Enid Bagnold
