Upside-Down House...Lee Vining
We've decided that each time we traverse the highway, between north and south, we're going to stop at one or two sites along the way. Today's explore was a recommendation by my friend, Bill's, granddaughter.
Lee Vining (founded in 1852) is one of those places we have merely driven through. Our destination was The Upside-Down House, Mono County's first "man-made" tourist attraction (1956). This unique dwelling was created by Nellie Bly O'Bryan (1893–1984), an actress, the first female licensed projectionist and hunting guide, visionary, entrepreneur, and long time resident of the Mono Basin. Her creation was inspired by two children's stories—Upside Down Land and The Upsidedownians. If you were a fan of Huell Howser, this house was profiled in his California's Gold series titled - PLACES I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO GO.
The Old School House Museum was one of those unique locations where one could get lost in 'eclecticness'. Rich in historical items and an oddity or two, we enjoyed learning of this area's past told by the docent. Its location, overlooking Mono Lake, made this informative detour quite delightful.

It's the way you ride the trail that counts.

That is so cool! I have never heard of this house. I must of missed that episode of Huell Howser. I love that show! He left a legacy for sure.
