Ferrari Fever comes to Spoleto...
An exciting event raced through town today- Mille Miglia and its tribute to Ferrari. I'm a huge fan of classic cars so I was super enthused when I heard the sound of high performance vehicles racing through our ancient streets.
A race born from the fact that the Italian Grand Prix switched towns in 1922. In the post war decade from 1947 to 1957, the Mille Miglia event was rapidly re-established as a world leading motor sporting competition. Major sports car manufacturers would enter cars employing some of the top drivers to win the 1000 Miglia race for them. Enzo Ferrari stated "The Mille Miglia created our cars and the Italian Automobile industry."
In 1977, twenty years after the race was abandoned on grounds of safety, the Mille Miglia was revived as a regular rally and it has now become a pinnacle of its type in which serious collectors participate. Only the very finest cars in the world are selected from a heavily oversubscribed list (with the entry fee sum of € 6,360.00).
Now, the cars leisurely meander the streets of various towns of Italy. On straight stretches however, they increase the RPMs and show the observers just what these cars are meant to do. When that happens, the crowd goes wild. Needless-to-say, I was one of the loudest cheerers!

So enjoying all your pics and blogs. Such fun to be sharing Italy with you, even if only thru pics and words. Tom and I thinking of feasability doing a year long "Sojourn" in your footsteps when I retire, mid 2014. With your guidance perhaps we could do it!! A big dream for sure but ???????
Love you and miss you guys. Now go buy that Ferrari...the Red one...nice "keepsake" from Italia to bring home eh???
Everyone looks like they are having a wonderful time. What a great experience. There is such a variety of cars there.
Can the green car (the second to the last picture)even compete with the other cars shown? It is my favorite...
