We Are Safe. Worried about South Lake Tahoe!

Steve and I had planned to go to Tahoe, this Thursday, to retrieve important things we had left behind. We had no idea when we left on the 17th, to get out of the poor air quality, that our sweet Sierra life would come to a halt.

Yesterday, after pondering for way too long, we loaded up the Subaru and headed to South Lake Tahoe. During the entire drive we were getting reports from neighbors and friends who were still in town. At about noon, after almost 300 miles, our direct across the street neighbor phoned and said that the police were there, making them evacuate. Steve called the sheriff dispatcher and asked if we would be allowed into town when we finally arrived and the answer was a firm NO!

We decided then to hang a U-turn and continue, days in advance and 480 more miles of driving, to visit with our Bay Area babies (I just couldn't go back to Temecula without a 'win' of some sort).

It was a stressful day, full of disappointment (in our poor planning and our failure to get 'home'). But it was also a day of gratitude. We had children who welcomed us, we have a lovely home in Temecula awaiting us, and we have friends who have continuously expressed care and concern.

The future for South Lake Tahoe is very uncertain at this point, but we are hopeful and appreciative of all those who are fighting to save our sweet Sierra life, nestled in the pines.
