Back Down U.S. 395...
We could drive the road from Tahoe to Temecula with our eyes closed. But that wouldn't be any fun, would it?
I have always been intrigued by this building, the old Hammerbacher's Market."Hammerbacher's Everything in One Stop Good Food - Complete Market - Sporting Goods - Camping Equipment" was so popular, it even had a postcard printed.
I always want to know what happens to a place to cause its demise. For Hammerbacher's, it was the retirement of its owner and the fact that he had no heirs to pass it on to. "Paul Hammerbacher, 87, of Hamilton, passed away in his home Monday, April 14, 2008. Paul would always greet his customers with a big smile in his small store and gas station in Coleville, Calif., which he ran for 37 years before retiring to Hamilton in 1991." Okay, so now I know the story. So interesting!
Since we left so early, we packed up breakfast and ate in the little town of Walker. It was the perfect picnic spot, indeed.
We stopped briefly in Bishop to learn a little of its history, told through murals placed about.
The Bishop Mural Society was incorporated to display the town's heritage in a spectacular outdoor art gallery surrounded by natural beauty. In its first ten years, the founders established Bishop as a mural destination by producing professional, historically accurate, visually and artistically excellent quality murals. Fifteen colorful mural sites showcase the fascinating history of the Owens Valley on buildings throughout the city. We only had time to ogle two of the 15 murals but we will be back for more, next time.
Our final stop was at Brewed Awakenings in Big Pine. This place has called my name many times but it has never been opened. We had to hang a U-turn but it was worth it. Always a fun road trip, meandering down U.S. 395.
“The two impulses in travel are to get away from home, and the other is to pursue something – a landscape, people, an exotic place. Certainly finding a place that you like or discovering something unusual is a very sustaining thing in travel.” – Paul Theroux
