Emerald Bay for Cindy's Last Day...

Hiking down to spend the morning in Emerald Bay is one of my favorite things to do. I was so excited that Cindy was up for it, too.

We left the cabin, before 8 AM, hoping to beat the crowds, heat, and the impending smoky skies.
Well, two out of three ain't bad (thank you, Meatloaf).

We rented a kayak for two because we wanted to explore the Tea House on Fannette Island.

Vikingsholm Castle is best viewed from the Lake. For those who aren't familiar with this historic landmark, its foundation was laid in 1928; the building was constructed in 1929 by 200 workers. It was the vision of Mrs. Lora Josephine Knight to be used as a summer home. Before starting construction, Mrs. Knight and her architect traveled to Scandinavia to gather ideas for the house. Some parts of the structure contain no nails or spikes, as a result of old-fashioned construction methods with most of the building being made from local materials. It is Tahoe's hidden gem and a wonderful destination.
The Tea House, also built by Mrs. Knight, was constructed atop the only island in the Lake. What I've learned is that it was not used very often. I know we had a bit of a work out, getting to it. I can only imagine older guests and staff having to scale the boulders that lead the way.

The effort was rewarded by beautiful views, however.
And it made for a pretty special picnic spot.
Tomorrow, Cindy flies home and I will miss her dearly. I will have to be content with the memories made here (and all the photos) until the next time!
