Glen Alpine Falls & Resort...

There is no better way to spend a Tahoe Monday than hiking to waterfalls and in history.

"The drive from Tallac around Fallen Leaf Lake under trees whose boles form arch or portal, framing pictures of the sunny lake, is a memorable experience; then on past Glen Alpine Falls, Lily Lake, and Modjeska Falls, up the deep mountain glen, where the road ends at the hospitable cottages, log-houses and spacious tents of Glen Alpine,"  a description of our path from The Lake of the Sky, a guide to Lake Tahoe in the High Sierras, published in 1915.
This video of the Falls must be watched with the volume up. It is amazing. Look how small I am in the photo (bottom right). WOW.

When flowers are in bloom and butterflies are dancing about, this is what I look like for most of our hiking. I just can't help myself. Beauty was everywhere.

I have always loved this bug. This is my best capture of one. Look at the shadows of his tiny feet making an impression in the water, as it walks on it. The Gerridae are a family of insects in the order Hemiptera, commonly known as water striders, water skeeters, water bugs, pond skaters, water skippers, or Jesus bugs.

The hike ended here, in the remains of the once famous (and Tahoe's earliest resort) Glen Alpine Springs (c. late 1860s). John Muir wrote of this historic landmark, "The Glen Alpine Springs tourist resort seems to me one of the most delightful places in all the famous Tahoe region. From no other valley, as far as I know, may excursions be made in a single day to so many peaks, wild gardens, glacier lakes, glacier meadows, and Alpine groves, cascades, etc."

There's a gleefulness that overcomes us when we are in nature, surrounded by all the goodness Tahoe has to offer. Gleeful indeed!

Best time of year to be there! The falls were raging when I took Gary up there too. Did you see that the huge tree right where we watch the falls from had fallen? I was surprised to see the shutters all removed from the building by the mineral spring. Fun to see inside this year. Love your bug feet shadows. cute.
