Shooting in Netherlands told by Nienke

I wrote to our Dutch foreign exchange student knowing she lived near the scene of the shooting that happened today in Utrecht. At least three people were killed and many others were injured.

Nienke wrote, "Thank you for checking in! What a crazy world we live in. I always thought - perhaps naively - that something like today's shooting would never happen THIS close to home, literally. I live approx. 4 km/2,5 miles from the crime scene."

This is us, visiting Nienke and her mom in 2000.
"We were ordered to stay indoors from 11:00 - 16:30 (4:30pm) and the state of alert was at a 5 - the highest ever. My city was literally closed for the better part of a day. Stores closed, people locked indoors for their own safety. The real threat of an act of terrorism was present...but luckily it was an isolated incident. A deranged and delusional man with a gun lost his way and killed 3 innocent people and injured 5 more. He was apprehended around 18:30. His motive...we might never find out.

For now, we mourn with the families that lost their people today and we pray that the injured make it. We hope the witnesses and bystanders recover from the horrible thing they saw today. Let's hope that tomorrow will be better."

Let's all hope that tomorrow will be better. My heart goes out to our Dutch friends.
