'Eye Candy': Butterflies & Flowers

There is a brilliant visual happiness happening in Southern California that is unbelievably indescribable.

I did not take this photo. I just couldn't capture the amazement like this photographer did.
For those who don't know, we have a super bloom which has covered everywhere in purple, orange and bright yellow wildflowers. What you may not know is that in addition, Southern California has also received another jaw-dropping gift from Mother Nature... Painted lady butterflies, which have arrived in swarms.

The butterflies are currently on their migration route from wintering grounds in northern Mexico and other areas to the Pacific Northwest, namely Oregon and Washington. They are EVERYWHERE and in the hundreds (if not thousands), appearing as blowing leaves until one pays close attention and realizes, joyously, that they are actually butterflies. WOW.
Though the insects embark on a similar journey each year, the number of painted ladies that have been spotted in recent days are said to be more than normal. The number of painted ladies currently floating through the state is on par with 2005 numbers, when an estimated 1 billion butterflies of the kind were spotted.
The reason for the increase is likely due, in part, to what helped the super bloom erupt so vibrantly: The weather. Specifically for the super bloom, a massive amount of rain (which is estimated at 150 percent more than normal), followed by warm weather led to the perfect conditions for long-dormant seeds under the surface to burst into life. Years of tremendous wildflower blooms typically are really big painted lady years. I'm so glad we didn't miss this phenomenal event. Eye candy indeed.

And speaking of flowers, this is Steve's brother's front yard. These flowers occur, every year on their own. What a visual gift.

"Beautiful and graceful,
varied and enchanting,
small but approachable,
butterflies lead you to the sunny side of life.
And everyone deserves a little sunshine."
-Jeffrey Glassberg
