Murder & Bears... Oh My!

I love 2-fer Tuesdays. A day when events line up, versus overlapping, and we can do both. We got to be at a book launch and a bear lecture. Woohoo!

Todd Borg, author of the Award-Winning Owen McKenna Mystery Thrillers, returned to the South Lake Tahoe Library to share his 20th novel. His main character has been described as "A hero who walks confidently in the footsteps of Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe, and Lew Archer" by Kirkus Reviews.

Todd's newest book is Tahoe Moon, "When Tahoe Detective Owen McKenna finds a lost girl, 8-year-old Camille Dexter, he doesn't realize that her grandfather and only guardian has been murdered and a killer has been hired to kill Camille and dump her body in the lake. McKenna also doesn't know that Camille has no relatives or friends because she and her grandfather have been living in his camper. Complicating the situation is that Camille is deaf. Brilliant but deaf. Camille's predicament will break your heart even as you fall in love with her grit and determination."

Over 90 fans were there for an evening of mystery, writing tips and descriptive Tahoe locales. Always, always fun!

The second part of our evening was back to Lakeview Commons for the Lake Tahoe Historical Society's last "Tahoe History Talks on the Beach". This was an encore performance by South Lake Tahoe urbanized bear expert Toogee Sielsch.
Toogee has lived in town for 40 years and prior to 2000 a bear sighting in the city was an extremely rare event. He spent over an hour educating, entertaining, and warning an audience of 200. It is 100% human laziness that has caused these gentle beasts to become a nuisance (this big guy lives in my neighborhood because not everyone has a bear box- ARG).
We learned a great deal about these omnivores who are always searching for food. Their VERY good sense of smell will have them approaching or entering homes if they smell food, or if they have found food before. They are very smart and strong and learn to get into open or unlocked windows and doors or under homes. Do not make bears feel welcome - make noise or throw things to scare them away - they will learn to respect your territory. Toogee did a theatrical display showing the proper way to dissuade a bear. Oh man, that guy knows his stuff and the presentation was an excellent lesson in how to better coexist with wildlife.
The sunset was the icing on the cake that was our amazing Tuesday!

I have enjoyed Todd Borg’s mysteries for years. I discovered them at a Left Coast Crime Book convention.
