Miscellaneous Musings...

I feel I've done a pretty good job sharing our day-to-day Haerr Happenings on my daily blog but sometimes, events fall through the blogging cracks and I get behind. This post has to be one of the more eclectic I have ever written. I hope you enjoy this effort at catching up.

On August 10th, we found ourselves back at Dangberg Historic Ranch Home to witness Kim Harris as she became Eliza Eppinger. Mrs. Eppinger was a local girl (Shingle Springs) who was a socialite in San Francisco during the 1906 earthquake and fire. Kim's portrayal was emotional and realistic. What an amazing talent. Wow.

On a rainy Monday, Cyndy came to learn the fun craft of Mail Art. It was a morning of creativity, connection and camaraderie (three of my favorite C words).

On a walk at Taylor Creek we saw this sign, explaining the exposed broken glass and ceramics strewn about the trail.
Turns out, this was the garbage dump for the Tallac Resort and Casino, a turn of the century Tahoe destination promoted as "The Grandest Resort in the World." The Resort filled more than 40 acres and offered all the amenities a guest could want.
Elias "Lucky" Baldwin acquired Tallac Point House in 1880, then improved it and used it as a hotel. Patrons enjoyed the hotel until 1914, when the building burned down.
In the trash treasure trove was this bottle by William Franzen & Son (1900 to 1921). I went on a knowledge quest about this Milwaukee company. History is truly found in unique places.
Since we've return to Tahoe, we've made connections with old and new friends. Erin (far right) is the daughter of my friend, Sharon. Erin and I have been e-pen pals and finally got to meet over coffee at Revive. What a great start to our friendship.
Joan, far right, and I met almost instantly after moving to Tahoe. She introduced me to so many of the organizations and people who made our transition to the Sierra unforgettable. She moved off the hill years ago so it was extra special when she came to town, if even briefly.
Keri and I met in Placerville. She and I have known each other for years. She, too, is a Temecula transplant having settled in Folsom. We met for a day of reacquainting and exploring.

Music was enjoyed with Lee, Margaret and their friends for an afternoon at Valhalla.
"Paul Kamm, Jonny Mojo and Shelby Snow are singer/ songwriters and front men of the Northern California Roots and World music/Rock and Roll jam band, Achilles Wheel. As an acoustic trio they bring the same high energy and engaging stage presence to a quieter place, combining a bit of Country and Bluegrass to the band’s famously hard driving sound. But it’s the infectious quality of their songwriting that really shines in this setting, and the diverse nature of it as well. Paul and Jonny work off of each other like two sides of the same coin, actively looking for and pushing each other to find the most in whatever song they’re playing. Shelby on the bass is like a river, both calm and turbulent, that runs through it and ties it all together."
Every morning I continue to play, and get frustrated by, Wordle. My co-players are Jan, Karen and Jenny which makes the challenges tolerable and victories sweeter.
We even found this cool mid-century modern house to ogle. I hope to find out more about it. Who, here in South Lake Tahoe, would create such a groovy space at least sixty years ago? Very, very cool.

Oh, and I gathered Sugar Pinecones to bake for a friend on the east coast who has never seen these before. So if you ever asked yourself, "Hmmm, I wonder how Denise keeps herself busy", I hope you have a better idea. Eclectic indeed.

but I couldn't find the time to do it.”
