Daiso: Delightfully Different
Whenever I get within several miles of a Daiso Store, I have to stop. I am so compelled. Truly.
Opened in 1972, and with 2,800 stores in Japan and over 4,000 stores worldwide, Daiso is often called the Japanese dollar store. According to their website, "Our cute, “kawaii” designs and unique kind of value simply cannot be compared to other dollar stores. We pride ourselves on the quality, variety, and uniqueness of our wide-ranging product line, which includes everything from stationery to cosmetics to home goods. Get a taste of Japanese culture with our origami paper, calligraphy tools, obento products, sensu fans, and other traditional Japanese items."
Daiso does cute like no one else and it sells (and I'm a fiend for it all). How can you explain the need for a 'tofu stamp'?
Or a matching set of Salt & Sugar sponges?
In addition, there are two different personal humidifiers. Note both require the cuteness of animals. Wild stuff.
Who doesn't need these cute 'chair socks'. Great for protecting your floor or as conversation starters. By the way, I have given these as gifts before. Fun stuff.
This attachable pocket is just good sense. Back in the day all pockets were separate from our clothing. Hmm. Daiso might be on to something here.
With temperatures exceeding 100° in the summer, I think Body Frozen Jelly might be a needed item in my purse.
The store was stocked with the best selection of razors. I'm just not sure why any woman would need to shave her cheek.
There were massagers for massaging various parts of one's body. Some were quite complicated (and a bit mysterious).
Everyone needs a door hook of a man holding on for dear life. Right?
The best kawaii (cute) is found in the stationery section. From their papergoods, to their erasers, I go crazy in this part of the store. I could spend hours here.
Yes, syringes. The first choice in mechanical pencils.
After opening their first US store in 2005, they have grown to over 60 stores across Washington, California, and Texas, with more to come every year. That means no matter where you are, there is most likely a place where for 150¥ you, too, can: be prepared for any travel sickness situation; massage any body part, protect your floors with kawaii socks; or just wander for hours ogling all Daiso has to offer. I suspect you'll get hooked. If you do go, please share the uniqueness that delights you the most. It isn't shopping. It's a treasure hunt. You just never know what you might find.
