Steve, his sons & the gals who love them!

What a day of Family Fun!
We awoke early for the 180 mile drive to Oakland to see where Kegan will spend his summer and to enjoy the day with all the kids.  Built in 1910 and lovingly restored by the wonderful owner, Jenny,  Kegan has found his "home".
I am on a Farmers Market craze right now and Berkeley's was our first stop.  While small, it housed unique products and produce I had never seen before.
I realize why I love these markets so much... the COLOR.
The next stop was Old Oakland, a surprisingly interesting place to explore.  The Old Oakland district was the "original" downtown during the 1860s after Central Pacific Railroad constructed a terminus. By the 1870s, elegant brick Victorian hotels were being built in the blocks surrounding the railroad station to accommodate travelers. The ground floor of the hotels were designed as series of narrow shops so that pedestrians would pass by many of them just walking down the block. The architectural styles of the time featured tall, cast-iron columns and large plate-glass windows.
No day is complete without a stop at a Goodwill Store.  I think the girls were afraid I would get these matching skirts for all of us.
One has to love a brewery whose motto is "It ain't brain surgery, it's just beer".  Pacific Coast Brewing, housed in a beautiful 1876 building was a casual and delicious place for lunch.
IKEA, 'Steel toed' work boot shopping for Kegan and one more beer stop made our day really complete.  Pyramid's Berkeley Alehouse is just a few miles from the University of California at Berkeley campus. This renovated warehouse space is both a brewery and a gathering place that's become an East Bay landmark.  It was the perfect end to a pretty perfect day!
Monica leaves on Wednesday for a summer Architecture Program in Europe so it was extra nice that she was able to be there with us.  Last year, on Father's Day, all six of us were together in Rome, Italy.  That fact does not escape me.  All is right in the world!

What a day!! I love Kegan's place, and the location! I have been to that Berkeley Farmer's Market before, lots of interesting people there. :)
It is really cool that Kegan and Monica are parting ways for the summer to do these great internships. Good for them.
