Nature from our Porch...
Two weeks ago, a Blue Jay was actively trying to build a nest in our porch eve. Every time he placed a twig, Steve would remove it. While we were gone to SoCal however, a Robin swooped in and constructed a fine home. I delighted in his songs and was eager to watch the next generation arrive. It is among the first birds to sing at dawn, and its song consists of several discrete units that are repeated.
We left for the day and when we returned the nest was on the ground. Hmm. I put gloves on and returned it to the safety of its protect perch. Next day when we returned, the nest was on the ground again. Our theory? We believe the Blue Jay retaliated for Steve's nest prevention and this feisty bird took it out on the poor Robin's nest. Blue jays are known for their characteristic bright blue and lavender feathers. These birds lay their eggs in their own nests and raise their own young, but they tend to destroy other bird's nests due to their territorial nature. They are also aggressive and confront other birds over a source of food.

And we thought only humans participated in revenge. Be careful when the Blue Bird of happiness lands on your finger. It will bite your nose.
I have two bird feeders in the front and the back of the house because I love the activity. We have probably ten different species that come to feed. But they have been gorging since they are expecting the food to be there. I can't afford them anymore! :)
Fred doesn't like that I feed them but they are so pretty I just can't resist!
Did the robin's nest ever stick?
