We bid our bidet adieu...

Many people know what a bidet is and some quite enjoy them, but for those who don't know, I thought I'd inform- which is part of what my blog is about... sharing all aspects of Italian culture.

According to Wikipedia, "A bidet is a low-mounted plumbing fixture or type of sink intended for washing the um, private lower region (not what was actually written).  Bidet is a French word for pony (and in Old French, bider meant to trot). This comes from the notion that one rides a bidet much like a pony is ridden.

Along with the proper use of the bidet comes the very necessary knowledge about bidet towels.  According to eHow, "Bidet towels are small bathroom towels that are usually hung on a rod, hook, or toilet paper stand near the toilet and bidet. After using the bidet, take a bidet towel to wipe away any excess moisture. Bidet towels are a softer, more economical, and environmentally friendly alternative to toilet paper for after-bidet use.

Each bathroom user has his own bidet towel. Private areas should be clean after using the bidet, so bidet towels can be reused."

Our apartment does not have a separate bidet but did have a shower nozzle adjacent to the toilet.  That last line, about the towels being reusable, is the reason Steve removed the bidet hardware.  There was just too much confusion about potentially improper towel usage (hand towels, wash cloth, etc).  The photo of the lady with the towel is a solution a girlfriend uses:  each half of the towel is marked for the proper part of the body on which to use it (hint: faccia is face).

"So welcome to the world of bidets,
where millions have put them to good use,
and could never live on this planet without them."

Do you think the landlord minds that Steve removed the hardware?
I like the idea of bidet's, but not the towel situation. I like the ones they have in Japan, where the bidet is part of the toilet. It is a stange sensation though (TMI?)... not easy to get used to. I think I just like the idea!
