Charleston... new friends, hidden treasures

Our day began at Saffron Café & Bakery, one of Charleston's most prestigious restaurants with us meeting Sharon, our incredible connection that made this all happen.  We delighted in getting to know her and more about the Charleston/Spoleto relationship over delicious food.

Steve and I then continued to explore Charleston and its decorative ironwork which may be seen all around the city in balconies, gates, stair railings, vents, boot scrapes, and decorative panels and finials. The city's ironwork, as it graces houses, churches and civic structures, is undeniably one of its greatest architectural treasures and something that we've begun to marvel at as we explore this city of hidden surprises.

Each street provides us with interesting things to marvel at and we are loving being in it.   We delighted in peeking through gates and seeing small private gardens, the treasures hidden behind decorative wrought iron gates and stone fences, that have a special allure to the garden aficionado because they are steeped in the history and culture of the city. Each day promises surprises....
