Roman waterfalls!

The Cascata delle Marmore  is a man-made waterfall created by the ancient Romans. Its total height is 541 feet, making it one of the tallest in Europe and the tallest man-made waterfall in the world.

In 271 BC, the townspeople of Rieti were becoming ill due to the stagnant river in the meadows around the town.  A canal was built to divert the water over the cliffs here.  The history is incredible and worth a read.

What is truly spectacular about the Falls is the fact that they are turned on, for the benefit of the hydroelectric plant and the tourists (7€ viewing fee) and according to a set schedule, achieving a spectacular effect at full flow.  During December, the flow is only turned on during the weekends so we will plan to return.  The trickling water began to freeze and the view was exceptionally beautiful!

I cannot believe you paid 7€ to see a manmade waterfall! When you get back you can pay me just 5€ to see hose water running off the roof! hahaha
I am only teasing. It looks very pretty.
