Girl Time with Julie: Day 1

Julie and I have been friends since our days at Cal State Fullerton (1980-85). We haven't had a sleepover since the pandemic. It was time!

The day was one of sharing a few of my favorite things beginning with coffee on the patio of Mission Grounds.

After thrifting at Rancho Coastal Humane Society Thrift Shop, we dined al fresco at The Fish Shop. Yum.
Steve and I have admired these homes several times and I had to share them with Julie. Located on a quiet street of quaint beach houses and mismatched cottages, this incongruous sight of two seemingly enormous boats always surprises.
Interestingly, they have never been to sea. Despite their 19 portholes, mariner’s wheels and quirky starboard list, the SS Encinitas and SS Moonlight have only ever been homes for landlubbers. They were built by architect Miles Kellogg in 1928 using timber salvaged from the local bathhouse and a hotel that failed to survive Prohibition’s dry years, the 1888 Moonlight Beach Dance Parlor. I am always delighted by these almost 100 year old beauties. Cool right?

Next stop was at the William D. Cannon Art Gallery for the last day of The Chair, an exhibition of one-of-a-kind chairs.
“The chair represents the most sacred meeting of form and function; it’s a piece synonymous with support, the reliable foundation of our everyday lives. And yet the simple chair is in perpetual reinvention mode: it is the unending challenge for the artist and designer.”
Julie and I delighted in it all (for my second time).

Our last stop was at the Carlsbad City Library for Julie to get a library card and for us to admire this unique art.
Sue Britt is a San Diego paper artist who has developed a technique she calls Paper Tapestry. Her highly textured work is a result of layering, carving, and weaving sub straights wrapped in paper to create highly textured landscapes. Her landscapes are full of motion, which is inspired by hiking and influenced by reading and thinking about change in the landscape over seasons, years, or millennia.
After dinner at home, we all got into our pajamas and met up in the TV room for Don't Worry Darling
Don't Worry Darling is a 2022 American psychological thriller, directed by Olivia Wilde, which appealed to us because of its filming location in Palm Springs (and the costuming). This movie is haunting and the more I think about it, the more I like it. It is definitely not for everyone but it has given us a new destination for exploration in Palm Springs tomorrow.
