Lunch in Kennewick, WA
One of my favorite things about road trips is finding unique places at which to dine. Just Joel's was a fantastic choice.
The motto here is "We do it for the smiles not the riches". I love that especially since big smiles were had!"At Joel's we believe that high quality comfort food is best done old school, and our offerings for the most important meal of the day are 100% fresh, 100% tasty, and 100% cooked with love. From egg breakfasts, waffles and pancakes all the way to specialty omelets we have what you need. We invite you to come join us for breakfast, so we can show you that the Old School has been rebuilt!"
You have to love a place where "pie for breakfast is socially acceptable" and where coffee is only 69¢!
While Steve had a Reuben sandwich for lunch, I delighted in a French toast breakfast and it was quality comfort food, indeed.
And not to let a history lesson go unmentioned, Kennewick and the greater Tri-Cities area experienced significant changes during World War II. In 1943, the United States opened the Hanford nuclear site in and north of Richland. Its purpose originally was to help produce nuclear weaponry, which the US was trying to develop. People came from across the United States to work at the neighboring town of Hanford, who were unaware of what they were actually producing. They were only told that their work would help the war effort. The federal government constructed housing in Richland, but many employees of that site then commuted from Kennewick. The plutonium refined at the Hanford Site was used in the Fat Man bomb, which was dropped in Nagasaki in 1945 in the decisive final blow of the war. As the Hanford Site's purpose has evolved, there has continually been a tremendous influence from the site on the workforce and economy of Kennewick.
One never knows what one will discover on a road trip. I think that's the most fun part of it. Onward for more!
