Photo Credit for a Sad Loss: Martin Hollay
On Mother's Day, I received an email from Taylor of the Tahoe Mountain News which read, "Hey Denise, We are running a little piece about Martin Hollay. You have this great photo of him from your blog that I was hoping we could publish. We, of course, would give you a photo credit. Is it OK to run it?" Would it be okay? Oh my gosh, what an honor!
I met Martin, for the first time, almost exactly a decade ago (May 31st, 2012), at a Lake Tahoe Historical Society presentation. Over the years, I ran into him quite often as he was a famous, friendly celebrity in South Lake Tahoe.
I wrote this after that first afternoon spent with him. "In a town like South Lake Tahoe, you hear about famous people... those who came here and left an indelible mark. Rarely does a person get to spend the afternoon with one of these historic figures, but today we gleefully did. Martin Hollay has been called Tahoe Royalty and he has lived a movie script worthy life for the past 91 years, all captured in the book I was so Lucky: The Life of Martin Hollay. However, today, we heard the condense version, from the legend himself, as a special presentation at the Lake Tahoe Museum. We learned about his life in Hungary, his time in an American Prison camp that made him love the people of his adopted homeland, and his early years at Heavenly Valley, designing ski runs and being Ski Patrol."
This guy was incredible and he loved his adopted hometown. Last year, for his 100th birthday, he wanted to ski 100 days. Since the conditions weren't right in Tahoe, he traveled to Mammoth to attain his goal. Wow!I am so sorry for this loss but so happy to have had the opportunity to have been in the company of such a man as Martin Hollay (and have the photos to prove it).
