The Cornmeal Porridge Festival....

After a beach day, we headed back to the quaint town of Silves for their 2nd annual Mostra Papas de Milho.

This event reminded us of all the sagra festivals we went to in Italy. A mostra is the chance for a region to showcase what it does best.
It is community, friendship, good food and a whole lot of fun (and yum).

We learned that nothing says "Summer" to the Portuguese more than these little treats. Caracois (snails) are a gastronomic tradition of the season. A kind woman offered us a taste and we just couldn't partake. I regret it now but it was fun to watch everyone else devour the little creatures.
Throughout the course of the evening, different people entertained. Like many European countries, the folk music of Portugal relies heavily on the accordion. I was delighted by this young musician.
We have been continuously surprised by Portugal. It is a smörgåsbord of unique treats and we're savoring them all.
