Portugal’s Footvolley Championship...

Oh yes, that totally is a thing!

Our town, Carvoeiro, was recently awarded the title of Europe’s best beach, so it was the perfect location to host the first stage of I Etapa Campeonato Nacional de Futevólei.

Over the next two days, 16 pairs will be competing, and showcasing, a sport that combines some of the best and most exciting traits of both football (soccer) and volleyball. Footvolley is very similar to beach volleyball except players are not allowed to use their hands or arms.

Footvolley is all about sun, sea, beach and fun. It includes long rallies and spectacular points. This sensational team sport demands an excellent balance, ball control, endurance, focus and quick reflexes. Body and mind in harmony with respect and fairplay. Footvolley is eye-catchingly addictive. Watching it was the perfect end to our week-long stay in this wonderful beach hamlet.

Tomorrow, we leave this little beach community and head north to Óbidos. Our new home will be a little walled city. We're excited, though sad, to say "Até mais!" to this chapter of our Portuguese adventure.
