Birds of Puerto Rico...

Today is Global Big Day. For me, it is a chance to parallel play with my birding friends on the Mainland.

What it is for everyone else is a competition answering the question, "How many birds can be seen in one day?" That’s the question that drives a ‘big day,’ a 24-hour birding binge that is a fond tradition among birders.

Today, more than 20,000 other bird lovers will be participating in this Day. How fun to be sharing it with those I am missing back home.

“The sharp thrill of seeing them reminded me of childhood happiness,
gifts under the Christmas tree, perhaps,
a kind of euphoria we adults manage to shut out most of the time.
This is why I bird-watch, to recapture what it's like
to live in this moment, right now.”
