¡Hola from Spain Again! Cruise Day 12 Alicante...
Today found us on La Costa Blanca. Alicante is a fun-loving beach town, but it also has many historical landmarks, each telling of a fascinating past, one story at a time.
It all began 7,000 years ago when the first tribes settled the slopes of Mount Benacantil. The Carthaginians fortified the site. The Romans ruled it. And the Moors made themselves at home for a couple of hundred years (until the Castilians drove them out). Alicante went on to become a major Mediterranean port for trade, though nowadays its sparkling harbor welcomes mostly cruise ships.
We delighted in discovering a Dali, nestled in a building we stumbled upon.
Our goal today was to reach the top of this peak. El Castillo de Santa Barbara (13th century) is perched atop Mount Benacantil. This Moorish fortress offered the best view of the city and an exceptional history lesson.
We ended our explore with our feet in the Mediterranean Ocean. So very Alicantesque indeed.
Drinks, overlooking the harbor, made the day complete. Todo es increíble en España.
