Live at Lakeview: It's Officially Summer

This exceptional Thursday night concert series, Live at Lakeview, began the first summer we moved to South Lake Tahoe (2012). Attending these shows is an event that just screams, "SUMMER" to us.

With a line-up which includes everything from Americana to Brazilian Funk to Hip-Hop and even Soul, there is something for each musical palette. I attend no matter the genre. It about just being there and the people who attend with me.
Cyndi and Steve are my Lakeview stalwarts. Yay!
Both bands performing were excellent. We witnessed the talents of the headliner, Forrest Day, for a longer time.
I love their bio, "Based out of Oakland, Forrest Day is a 5 piece band that's been performing concerts around the country for almost a decade. It's a true rags to riches story, but without any money. New album in the works, shows being booked, this wonka boat is showing no signs of slowing..."

High on the Why I Love This So Much List is the people-watching. This guy has danced his heart out since Day 1. I anticipate him being there and he never disappoints.
The welcoming spirit allows attendees to be whoever they are.
These guys, part of a larger group of men in what seems their wives' bikini bottoms, had the entire audience chuckling. They clearly have no qualms about their attire. Hysterical.

Here's a 30 second peek at all the fun to be had on a South Lake Tahoe Thursday night. And while we left before the sunset, the evening held all the magic it has for the last 13 summers. What a blast!

"The summer night is
like a perfection of thought."

Author Todd Borg at the SLT Library

Todd Borg has been a presence on my blog almost as much as Scrabble. He is a delightful, award-winning murder mystery writer who launches his newest novel at the South Lake Tahoe Library every summer.

From www.goodreads.com:

Todd Borg and his wife moved from Minnesota to Lake Tahoe in 1990. After his fourth Tahoe novel, he sold his business to write full time.

In addition to winning the Ben Franklin Award for Best Mystery of the Year, Todd Borg's Owen McKenna mysteries have been chosen for Top 5 Mystery lists by the prestigious Library Journal, and by Mystery News Reviewer G. Wedgwood. He's won Best Mystery and Best Thriller honors from the Bay Area Independent Publishers Association and received Best New Fiction accolades from libraries. His novels have also received starred reviews and raves in major trade journals and newspapers across the country

Excitingly, Todd was there to not only share his 22nd book in the Owen McKenna Mystery Thriller series but also to introduce the first novel in an entirely new series, Josie Strong: A Dark Road Suspense Book. When does this guy sleep?

Wilderness Vacation has the intriguing protagonist, UCLA Medieval History (and expert weapons maker) Professor Josie Strong, one of the few Black women professors nationwide. She has succeeded very well in a challenging career. It remains to be seen if she can succeed as a single mother raising her 14-year-old daughter Samantha... and avoid being killed in the process!

On Tahoe Rescue, Todd had me with just one word... Pirates. This sounds like the perfect beach read.
There is no better setting for a library. And what a space in which to gather for an evening of literature, camaraderie, and a little fictional mayhem. I loved it.

With all seventy chairs filled, one could feel the love for Todd with each fan encounter. Everyone was just so happy to be there... especially me.

I'm in South Lake Tahoe...

I've returned to my Happy Place to reconnect with all I love after our extended absence.

I had a date with Karen today and she was willing to hike down to Emerald Bay with me. I must do this at least once a Summer and Karen was right when she said that we should do it my first day in town just because you never know what might happen.
This sign, at the trailhead, was new to me. It reads, "CAUTION. This hike is a 2 mile out and back hike with 500 ft elevation gain in 1 mile at 6700 ft elevation. This is a strenuous hike for some people (ME). Please do not let family or friends attempt if they have mobility issues, medical complications or recent surgeries. Be sure to have water and snacks- Elevation changes can have surprising effects. There are NO RIDES OUT. What is hiked down MUST be hiked up."

I was a bit concerned even before reading the warning. I'm out of shape. I haven't been in high elevation in six months. Would I be able to do it?

I am so glad I didn't miss this. Yes, the going was slow but Karen is patient and we were rewarded with the splendor we know and love.

While sitting on the dock of the bay, this beauty arrived. The owner of Chispa, after listening to our praise, told us the story of his boat. When he was in his 20s he saw this boat on the Lake and never forgot it. Eventually, after being patient, he was able to purchase it and just had to rename it. The old-time placer miners talked of chispa. It is an expressive Spanish word which means a spark of fire. This 1936 Gar Wood is definitely a spark of fire on the emerald blue water of Lake Tahoe. WOW.
Karen's must was a visit to Lower Eagle Falls. The hike was so worth it.
This was our perfect picnic spot!

This trip north is a solo one for me but next time Steve will be joining me. This is his Happy Place, too.

Fiber in 3D at the Cannon

Opening today, the new exhibit at Carlsbad's Cannon Art Gallery called my name.

"Featuring contemporary dimensional fiber works by over 25 national artists juried by Fiber Art Now. Explore a breadth of unique materials, methods and themes interpreted through fiber and fabric techniques such as installation, weaving, basketry, sculpture, felting, surface design, knitting, wearables, and mixed media."
Artist Jing Pei called this very cool 'dress' Tacky Statues: Flora. What fun.

This was a collection of such diverse talent, styles, and mediums. We we so thoroughly impressed by it all.
I would wear George-Ann Bowers' Mango Tango.
This very interesting '9' is really titled Magellanic. I found it intriguing.
Gray Caskey created this using porcelain, graphite, bamboo, and copper. Wild.
This piece demanded a close study and a pair of glasses! Hear Me Out by Amy Genser is amazingly complicated.
Strips of mulberry paper were coiled into 'tiles' that were joined (woven together), in a very interesting way using with copper wire.

This beautiful Kimono by Jayne Tucker was crafted using recycled tea bags and cotton thread. How very clever!
Recycling indeed!
Can you guess of what this fancy vest is made? Radioles Rhythm, by Kim Hahn and Ja-Young Hwang constructed this using surgical masks and KN95 masks.

Common Thread by Angela Corson was so unique.

I love when art makes me say an audible "Wow". Lavastone did just that.
Cecilia Lusven challenged the observer to guess what her medium was...
Oh my gosh, this art is manipulated bicycle inner tubes! Craziness.
In days/nights Joyce Barker-Schwartz also used coils but hers were cotton canvas strips.

Passage was stunning. Susan Zimmerman used linen, stained with coffee and tea, to create a work that, for me, evoked whimsy and wanderlust. I loved it.

This small, free art gallery is a true treasure in Carlsbad. We have seen such a variety of exhibits. Steve actually said that he thought Fiber in 3D was one of the best. It will be at the William D. Cannon Art Gallery until November 30th. If you're anywhere near, I highly recommend a stop by. Let me know which piece calls your name. Wow.
