Stopping for Sunflowers...

I was just wistfully mentioning how I wondered if there were going to still be sunflower fields on our drive to the Bay Area when I spotted a yellow hue on the horizon. Upon further examination, I yelled, "Stop the Truck!" Sunflowers are so my thing!

For years the farmers of Yolo County have grown sunflowers — more than 70,000 acres of them — primarily for the seeds that get exported. Over the last few years I've seen the farms being sold so I was fearful I would miss them but I was delightfully surprised by this roadside discovery.

I appreciated this advice posted on the Sunflower Fields of Yolo County website, "Drive carefully, pull over with caution, and respect all signs that say No Trespassing, and similar as you explore the area. Be careful not to break any stems — these beautiful crops are the farmer’s livelihood!"

“Sunflowers end up facing the sun,
but they go through a lot of dirt to find their way there.”
