Book Art Found in the Library...

Steve and I stumbled into the Cole Library in Carlsbad and had the delightful opportunity to find Gina Pisello's Book Art exhibition on display.

According to the information provided, "Gina Pisello is a book artist and paper engineer. Her work consists of original book structures, altered books, and paper sculptures. She explores themes of time, personal history, and the interplay of shadow and light. She has taught book arts for over 16 years, focusing mainly on book structures she has invented. Membership in groups such as San Diego Book Arts and Puget Sound Book Artists have given her opportunities to learn new skills and share discoveries with fellow artists. Her work has been accepted in exhibitions in San Diego County, University of Puget Sound, University of South Dakota, the Minnesota Center for Book Arts and the University of Western England, Bristol among others. Her work is in several private collections as well as the University of Washington and the University of Puget Sound special collections."

According to her artist statement, "I have been playing with paper for most of my life, first folding simple flowers as a child then learning to make artist’s books as an adult. I recently started working on paper sculptures as well. Fascinated by line, shadow and texture I strive to turn paper into dynamic, three-dimensional sculptures that invite the viewer in and reward them with hidden depth and meaning. I explore the themes of time (on the personal and geologic scale) and nature in all its subtlety."
How cool is Birds of America? The folded cranes are actually pages within a vintage birding book. Wow.

This, Knitting a New Story, was my favorite. The 'yarn' is actually torn paper twisted with the words visible. So very, very creative and what a cool discovery for me.
