Cornish Christmas in Grass Valley...
Our home for the night was in the quaint Gold Rush town of Grass Valley.
After settling in in each of our respective homes, we met up with Bob and Jenny for Pasties. A pasty is a baked pastry, a traditional variety of which is particularly associated with Cornwall, United Kingdom, whose main ingredients are a flaky pastry case oozing with variable fillings, usually beef and vegetables. It is a culinary highlight anytime we're near Grass Valley.
We weren't here just for the pasties, however. We were here for the 51st Annual Cornish Christmas. Specifically to help out with Bob's Whimsical Cottage Booth.
This little girl's face sums up the feeling most people have when they see Bob's hand carved hobbit houses. He is a talented guy and it was so fun to see him at work.
So what is Cornish Christmas? "Recapture the spirit of Christmas past amid the charming surroundings of historic downtown Grass Valley California during the annual Cornish Christmas Celebration. Started in 1967 as a way to preserve Grass Valley’s Cornish heritage and holiday traditions, Cornish Christmas remains one of our most popular events. Mill and West Main Streets are closed to motorized traffic and filled with the sights and sounds of an old fashioned Christmas; carolers, jugglers, musicians, magicians, the Grass Valley Cornish Carol Choir, Tommyknocker Cloggers and of course, Santa Claus. Handmade arts and craft from artists throughout California are displayed on our historic downtown Grass Valley streets."
Old traditions, merriment, music and friends. What a joyous evening in Grass Valley.
“My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern,
is very simple: loving others.
Come to think of it,
why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?”
- Bob Hope
