Ronald Reagan & Temecula
We have discovered some new since we moved to Tahoe in 2012. One cool discovery was the Ronald Reagan Sports Park. For those who may not know, the sports park got its name as the result of a speech President Reagan made to the U.S. Olympic Committee in 1983. He praised Temecula and what he called the community’s “can do” volunteer spirit.
“There are many similar stories right here in California, the folks in a rather small town, Temecula. They got together and built themselves a sports park, held fundraising barbecues and dinners. And those that didn't have money, volunteered the time and energy. And now the young people of that community have baseball diamonds for Little League and other sports events, just due to what's traditional Americanism.” Is that so dang cool?
For those who haven’t known Temecula as anything other than the city that it is today, in 1983, the population was about one-tenth of what it is now. It wouldn’t be incorporated until 1989. So this was no small accomplishment for indeed, a small town. On the 22nd anniversary of that speech, the Rancho California Sports Park was renamed after Ronald Reagan with the life-sized statue not being installed until 2012. This was truly new for us.
“The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things.
He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things.”
― Ronald Reagan
